By Dennis Wilson Utilizing a ruler change dictated by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the order of weight divisions for the championship finals at the NJSIAA/Arthur Groom & Co. State Wrestling Championships on Sunday at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City was determined by a draw, the same format used in dual matches and county tournaments. Bergen Catholic’s Jonathan Becker and Bound Brook’s Andrew Campolattano opened the championship round in a “Battle of Crusaders”, clashing in the 189-pound bracket starting at 2:00 PM. Becker came out on the short-end of a 4-2 decision but collected the silver medal, the top finish by a Bergen County grappler. Campolattano, the No. 8 seed, took the second-seeded Becker to the mat with 30 seconds remaining the opening period. Becker battled back from the down or defensive position in the second period, to score two points on a reversal 34 ticks into the period that knotted the score at 2-2. Campolattano escaped with 1:04 remaining for a 3-2 lead that lasted until the end of the middle period. Becker allowed Campolatttano a neutral move to start the third period to trail 4-2 with the hopes of a takedown. The strategy nearly succeeded when the Crusader grabbed the Bound Brook grappler’s ankle with 45 seconds left but could not take him to the mat. Rebounding from losses to pick up bronze medals with victories in the third place consolation round bouts were Queen of Peace’s 112-pound Frank Cagnina, Lodi’s 171-pound Dan Rinaldi and Don Bosco Prep’s 285-pound Chris Manna. Finishing fourth was River Dell’s 103-pound Dave Della Torre while sixth place awards were earned by Ramsey’s 145-pound Dan Clarke, Don Bosco Prep’s 160-pound Nick Vetterlein and 171-pound Marc Peck of the combined Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge program. Bogota’s 145-pound Emmanuel Ajagbe wrestled back to a seventh place effort while Queen of Peace’s 103-pound Anthony Perrotti and Bergen Catholic’s 135-pound Matt Spataro finished in eighth place.
